Elly Henes was no stranger to winning over the course of her five years at NC State, proven by her multitude of achievements throughout her career. In a year where most would have let the ways of the world deter them from being successful on the track, Henes pushed through to add onto her list of all-time accomplishments.
NC State track and field boasts the women's 5000m national champion, Elly Henes, who becomes the first member of the Pack to win the gold in any event at the NCAA Championships since 2002. The story behind her gold medal doesn't end there however, and multiple other members of the Pack earned All-American honors.
Pack cross country has found a lot of success in recent years and nothing changed in 2020 with the women winning its fifth consecutive conference title and the men taking the silver in its race.
It’s the final day of 2019, and Technician sports finishes out the top 19 NC State sports moments of the year with 1-7 on New Year’s Eve. The finale includes huge postseason finishes from NC State wrestling, swimming and diving, and women’s cross country, long winning streaks from Pack baseball and women’s basketball, and a pair of men’s basketball buzzer-beaters.
For cross country runner Elly Henes, running has always been in her blood. Her mother, and coach, Laurie Henes was a finalist at the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials for track and field and her father was an All-American in track and field and cross country for the Wolfpack.
The NC State women’s cross country team placed 12 of the top 13 runners at the adidas XC Challenge, hosted by NC State, at the WakeMed Soccer Park XC Course.
