Friday, at the Board of Governors meeting, Erskine Bowles announced his plans to retire. President since 2006, Bowles' most recent influence is the tuition increase proposal. He has not specified how long he will remain at the system or detailed the reasons for his decision.

A Greensboro native, Bowles is a former White House Chief of Staff under former President Bill Clinton. Bowles' primary experience is in politics and the financial sphere, according to the University of North Carolina's biography on Bowles.
