The Counseling Center held workshops last week to help give students a boost before exams, and according to director Lee Salter, it will have normal hours during exam week.

"We're open every day the University is open," Salter said.

The emergency call service will still be open 24 hours a day, he said.

Some of the workshops this week included sessions on healthy cramming, avoiding procrastination, keeping healthy emotions during exams, health and wellness, stress management and study skills.

Attendance was high at each session, according to Salter, and the center traditionally has them before exams.

Students need to take care of themselves by eating properly, getting enough sleep and allowing free time to enter one's schedule to keep from burning out, Salter said.

The center had an increase of visitors in the last half of the semester, which he said is typical.

"[The increase] starts a little earlier, it seems, every year," Salter said.

More people begin to come six or seven weeks before exams, Salter said, right before spring break.

"That increase keeps getting larger right up to exam week," he said.

Scheduling study time and break time is key when planning a schedule, according to Salter. It is also important to save time to keep up with relationships with friends and family.

By setting study time in a schedule, Salter said students will not be so stressed, because they will know when it is time to study, and when it is appropriate not to study.

The more organized the student, and the better they take care of themselves, he said, the better they will do on exams.

Jeff Butler, a sophomore in political science, said exam schedules can be helpful to easing stress also.

"I like how I have days in between exams so I can relax in between them," he said. "I don't have an exam every day, so I'm not always working. I use a planner to keep everything in order so I know when I need to have stuff done."

Butler also said exercise helps him during exam week, and Salter said it is a good stress reliever.

While the center is open when the University is open, and accessible to students, Salter said it did not have the demand necessary to create new programs in relation to campus shootings across the country, such as at Northern Illinois University or Virginia Tech.

The center does offer assistance to area schools that need it, as was the case after the shooting death of UNC-Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson.
